Elena Moore traced her finger over the pedigree chart for Palisade, a nine-year-old Blue Roan Spanish Mustang stallion. The papers, records of Heritage Drift's prized herds, were spread across the solid oak dining room table, a map of their ranch's future.
"It's hard to believe it's already time to start the breeding process," Elena murmured to her fiance, Rafael Ortega, not looking up from the chart.
Rafael leaned back in his chair, a half-smile on his face. "Hard to believe, or you're just excited?"
Elena finally met his gaze. "A little of both. You know what a headache it is to match them up. It's not just about finding a pretty stallion for a random mare." She gestured to the pile of paperwork. "You have to consider everything—health, lineage, conformation, temperament, even how their ages align. As a breeding specialist, my main goal is to keep the Spanish Mustang line strong and true. The rest is just a bonus."
"Sounds like you've been at this for a while," Rafael said, standing up. "How about I make us some coffee? You can take a break."
"That would be fantastic, love," Elena said, leaning back and stretching.
"Any of my mother's baking left?" Rafael called over his shoulder as he walked toward the kitchen.
"I think so," Elena replied. "She makes enough to feed an army."
A few minutes later, the rich smell of coffee and freshly baked goods filled the air. Rafael returned, balancing two steaming mugs and a plate piled high with his mother's homemade cookies. "Let's move to the lounge. It's more comfortable."
Settled on the plush sofa, with the warmth of the coffee seeping into her hands, Elena finally relaxed.
"So," Rafael began, taking a bite of a cookie. "With all those factors to consider, is there a dream pairing you can't wait to breed? A specific foal you have in your head?"
Elena tilted her head, a familiar spark in her eyes. "A dream pairing," she mused. "Well, I'd have to wait a few more seasons, but I would die for a foal sired by Marca del Horizonte out of Llanura Dorada."
Rafael paused mid-chew, his eyes wide. "Marca del Horizonte? The versatility boy? And my young endurance mare? I'm shocked!" He placed a hand over his heart in a dramatic gesture of fake disbelief.
"Hey now, you were the one who asked," Elena said, feigning offense. "But can you just imagine that foal? Both of them have incredible heart and wonderful temperaments. Their strengths and weaknesses even each other out. It would be the perfect pairing."
"And the color they could produce," Rafael said, a dreamy look in his eyes. "A smoky grulla would be incredible."
"That's just a bonus," Elena said with a laugh. "The health and well-being of the horses always come first. But, a smoky grulla would be amazing."
She took a long sip of her coffee. "But I digress. That's a pairing for the future."
Rafael smiled, picking up another cookie. "Fair enough. Back to going over those papers then?"
"Yup," Elena said, a smile on her face as she reached for her own cookie. The day had only just begun.
